Spreading the festive feeling at Trevaskis Farm...
Edition 31 - Date 14.12.10

It's the final countdown - the last few weeks before Christmas! Christmas parties are well under way in the restaurant; we can't move in the kitchen for pigs-in-blankets and brussels sprouts, while the patisserie section are merrily churning out endless Christmas puddings and mince pies. The restaurant stereo is pumping out Christmas carols - you'll even catch Seth huskily singing along while he serves desserts, such is the festive cheer. Danny and Tracy can be found out on the patio 'modelling' Christmas trees, while the shape of TM is changing again as we add extra cold storage to the butchery ready for a very busy Christmas.

The farm, as always is the 'engine room' for Trevaskis, and for much of our pig stock the days are numbered, as we are using 100% home- reared pork for gammons and so on over the Christmas period  (a massive achievement baring in mind the increased demand caused by the expansion of both farm market and restaurant in the past few years). For the luckier pigs, decisions are already being made about next year's showing stock - trotters crossed! The winter pruning jobs are well underway in the apple orchard, while two new polytunnels are playing host to newly planted crops of blackberries and raspberries, ready for next year and three new polytunnels have been erected ready for even more strawberries next year.

We love Christmas at Trevaskis (..most of us - some of the pigs aren't keen...), and shopping at TM is going to be even more of a pleasureable experience this year. Mulled wine, chestnuts, brass on for more!

Christmas shopping made not just easy, but pleasureable!
There are so many treats in store over the Christmas period in TM. From stollen tasting to hot chestnuts and mulled wine while you shop, plus our Christmas marquee loaded with all the fresh produce you could possibly need over the Christmas period...and you definately won't be fighting over a last sorry looking abundance of fresh produce right up until close at four o'clock on Christmas Eve.

As we are in the lucky position of having this dual business - restaurant and market - there is always a really fast turnover of fresh produce so we always have a fresh abundance of the staples - parsnips, potatoes, brussels, carrots, fruit, nuts ... everything you could possibly need, as well as a wealth of Christmas luxuries that you'll think you need as soon as you see them! Beautiful artisan chocolates made by Nikki Grant local chocolatiere and Andrea of I Should CoCo in St Ives (if you came to our Big Game Event last weekend you may have got an insight into how these delectable chocolates are made). Local wines from Camel Valley and Polgoon, beautiful cupcakes, quirky Christmas decorations and loads more.

Even better, we decided to spread the Christmas cheer just a little bit further! In the week before Christmas, we will be serving bags of hot chestnuts and cups of hot mulled wine from our fruit and veg marquee on the patio, to warm you while you shop. Also, Tracy has arranged 'stollen tasting' sessions from 11am to 4pm on Saturday 18th and then daily from 10am in the fruit and veg marquee until Christmas Eve.

Just top it all off and add that final bit of seasonal cheer, Lanner Brass Academy will be playing Christmas carols for our customers on Sunday 19th December.

Great last minute present ideas...
If you're still struggling with ideas or running just a bit short of time for present shopping, a tailor-made hamper is a really lovely gift to receive. We now offer a free hamper wrapping service up until Wednesday 22nd - you just choose the basket, decorations and the contents of your hamper, whether you choose cheeses, chutneys, wines, chocolates, natural skincare products or a meat and vegetable hamper, and we'll beautifully wrap it while you wait (this is a good moment to enjoy a glass of hot mulled wine...) Alternatively, give us a ring and describe what sort of hamper you would like and we'll have it ready to collect at your convenience. Similarly, our gift vouchers, which can be used in the Market or restaurant, are a really popular present and can be ordered over the phone.

To order gift vouchers, call 01209 713931; to order Christmas hampers, call 01209 714009.

'Twas the week before Christmas, and all thru the butchery....
...Pete and his team, with guest appearances from Giles, Tracy and various others, are beavering away through the wee hours weighing, preparing and allocating birds for your Christmas turkey orders, to make the collection process as stress-free as possible.

It is an enormous amount work by a formidable team, and as Christmas Eve draws nearer, the language gets a bit bluer, the caffiene flows pretty freely, the jokes certainly get dirtier, and there is a strange air of insane hilarity in the butchery. By Christmas Eve, they have pretty much forgotten what the outside world looks like in daylight...

But it is very rewarding to see the satisfaction on everyone's face when the collection of around 700 birds runs smoothly, with no long queues.

Once the big chiller lorry and the birds arrive, they are weighed, prepared and allocated according to each order and a ticket number is given. When you arrive to collect your bird, you will be given this ticket number. You will then be handed your bird by Giles, or Jake now he's big enough to lift a whole turkey (start 'em young...) quite literally off the back of a lorry!

It is a delightfully easy system that means long queues at the butchery are avoided, as well as a lot of stress (unless you're Pete!).

If you haven't yet ordered your turkey, don't panic, we have plenty on hand for those last minute customers! Traditional white, free range and organic locally-reared turkeys are still available.

Call 01209 714009 to order your Christmas meats.

Merry Christmas from all at Trevaskis Farm!
