A new market is born...
Edition 12 - 19-05-08

If you have been searching for an alternative to your weekly supermarket shop, we beleive we now have the answer. We are taking the farm shopping experience back to it's roots - the way it was when we started out in 1979, that is, affordable local and home grown produce that forms part, if not all, of a weekly grocery shop.

After a gruelling few months of expansion and refit we have, this week, launched our new farm market and this is a quick mail to let you all know, and see a few of the things that have happened. I will find the time for a more detailed farm update next week.

Affordable, convenient and not a supermarket..?
This was the challenge in hand, how do we make this a market that is both affordable, convenient and enables you to complete an entire weekly shop that has no compromises in terms of the quality and authenticity of the food that it sells. We have researched the market tirelessly over the last few months to ensure that we could do just this.

Having traveled the county and country to find only the very best organic, fairly traded, ecological, artisan and above all affordable products we are quite pleased with what we found and have some great new ranges for you to try. And that's the difference; here you can actually try something before you buy it. This is something that the faceless multiple has taken away from us, the consumer. You are somehow expected to be herded down long aisles with no way out, picking up prepackaged product after prepackaged product, having to draw your own conclusion on the quality and authenticity before finally arriving at the pay point to serve only as a place to deposit your money with no return.

So, after that rant allow me to tell you where I think we differ.

Our counter point greets the consumer on arrival, encouraging conversation, because we have confidence in the product on offer. We have our new deli counter with a huge range of Cornish cheeses, but also some world cheeses to complete the offer. And then there is the olive counter; beautiful mammoth green olives, stuffed olives, mixed olives and the popular kalamata - and all available to taste before you buy. We have our own home-cured salamis, chorizos and are working on our Parma ham, all boasting pretty much zero food miles! However, this is also complimented with some of the finest Spanish cured meats from small artisan producers, with 20 month dry cured Serrano ham, side cured Lomo and 24 month cured Iberico ham.

Our butchery continues to go from strength to strength, serving only the finest of our home-reared, rare-breed pork, the finest local South Devon breed beef, free-range West Country chicken, local lamb and all the other trimmings you have come to expect.

Then there is the new fish counter, stocking a huge variety of fish and shellfish beautifully laid on ice and FROM LOCAL WATERS. Fresh from Newlyn daily, with a fishmonger who has grown up in the industry, able to offer advice on fish types, flavours and cooking. There are scallops, gurnard, smoked prawns and crevettes, John Dory, turbot, crab meat, cod and much much more.

And although a cold start to year, our crops are starting to flow in with our own strawberries, radishes, bunched carrots, beetroot, leeks, spring cabbage and with over 90 crops growing on the farm this year, more will be flooding in very soon, offering the ability to purchase a complete range of crops with the confidence of ZERO FOOD MILES.

Greeting you on your arrival is the tantalising smell of the bakery. This is not just any fresh bread, but 'BAKER TOMS' bread - baked daily just up the road, offering yet another real artisan Cornish product. Made using only the finest organic flours with no preservatives or additives, the taste and quality is unbelievable, and for those of you who have tried this before, I am sure you will agree. With a great range from 'parmesan and red onion' to my favourite, 'carrot, mustard and thyme', along with wholemeal and traditional whites, there is something for everyone. This is a true old fashioned-style bread that once you start eating, you just can't stop!

Our dairy counter is full of fresh local milks, creams, yoghurts and juices as well as a range of local smoked meats and the finest fresh pasta. This is complemented by our freezer centre, packed full of 'Willy Wallers' ice-cream, hand made in St Ives using our own fruits and utterly to die for. We have even created our own range of ready-meals, handmade on site in our restaurant kitchens. In the grocery section, too, we have worked very hard to complete your weekly shop with the very best affordable products at hand. Some great ranges available, with many on taste throughout the next few weeks.

With the shop open from 8am to 8pm daily, I reckon we tick the box of convenience.

So there you have our offer, for those of you who have already shopped with us this week- a big thank you for your overwhelming comments on the new market and your true show of support for our vision. It has meant a great deal to us, but above all to the team here at Trevaskis that have all worked so hard both day and night to make this happen.

Please remember, we are listening. If there are items that you would like to see on the shelves to enable you to complete your weekly shop under one roof, let us know and we will do our best to stock them.
